Experimental musician Sun Araw is touring NZ in October

Sun Araw – Deep Cover

By Jo 16 August 2010

Nicely creepy and quite dubby. I first heard this on Stinky Jim’s radio show. That man has excellent taste – the show is always worth a listen.

Sun Araw is playing at Happy in Wellington on October 14th and Whammy in Auckland on the 15th. Definitely looking forward to this one.

Yelawolf is looking for some old-fashioned alien love...

Yelawolf – Looking For Alien Love

By Thomas 14 August 2010

On the day I get around to listening to the new Big Boi album I come across a track by Yelawolf that reminds me of old Outkast. The former was much less disappointing than those by other artists I have been waiting to drop this year (e.g. B.o.B. – ugh!) and actually kind of good. But this is really fresh – check it! And add Yelawolf to the list of artists with anticipated albums to drop later this year – may it not disappoint.

Collaboration between Oneohtrix Point Never and Antony of Antony and the Johnsons

Oneohtrix Point Never – Returnal (w/ Antony Hegarty)

By Thomas 12 August 2010

I was _going_ to post the title track off Antony and the Johnsons‘s new five track EP, “Thank You For Your Love”. Which will also be the first single off their forthcoming album “Swanlights”. I look forward to the EP and LP for sure, but then I came across this collaboration between Antony and Oneohtrix Point Never and just had to post it.

The track is a rework of the title track of OPN’s latest full-length album, Returnal. The original is psych-drone awesomeness. This is stripped-back gorgeousness.

God's answer to Carl Sagan autoned - direct from the 90s.

Carman – There is a God

By Thomas 10 August 2010

Carman is not a fictitious character from a Saturday Night Live skit. I had to double-check this when a friend introduced me to his music. No, he’s a genuine happy-clapping hard-selling entertainer.

This song is like the theist answer to Carl Sagan autoned tune – with its stellar 90′s sci-fi special effects and lines like “The size, position and angle of the earth is a scientific phenomenon to see. A few degrees closer to the sun we’d disintegrate, a few degrees further we’d freeze. The axis of the earth is titled at a perfect 23 degree angle and it’s no mistake that it is.”

But my favourite line has to be, “Atheism has never created an artistic masterpiece, never healed a fatal disease or calmed a fear”. My music collection would beg to differ, but what do I know Carman? Truly entertaining stuff, for all the wrong/right reasons. Disappear down a YouTube rabbit hole with more of his videos, “Witches Invitation” is another favourite – his answer to Michael Jackson’s Thriller it would seen.

The winter remix of Katy Perry's summertime anthem.

Katy Perry – California Gurls (Majestyy Remix)

By Thomas 9 August 2010

The only problem with Katy Perry’s summer anthem and duo with Snoop is that it is winter down in this part of the world. To the rescue comes the Majestyy remix which slows it riiiight down and makes it suitable for listening to while lazing in front of the heater.
