Nicely creepy and quite dubby. I first heard this on Stinky Jim’s radio show. That man has excellent taste – the show is always worth a listen. DEEP COVER – SUN ARAW from CatCakes on Vimeo. Sun Araw is playing at Happy in Wellington on October 14th and Whammy in Auckland on the 15th. Definitely [Read the Rest...]

I’m certain that ‘One’ reminds me of a particular mid-1980s dreamy pop song that I can’t quite pull out of my brain right now. I’ve been poring over Wikipedia lists of songs from this time period in the hopes of working out exactly which song it sounds like, with no luck. Maybe it’s just that [Read the Rest...]

Last night, we headed to Mighty Mighty with the aim of catching Leno Lovecraft again and Golden Axe‘s album release party. Fifteen minutes after we showed up, the fire alarm went off, we were evacuated and the bar closed for the evening! There’s a re-do of the gig tonight. I won’t be there tonight, so [Read the Rest...]

I’ve enjoyed everything I’ve heard from local band The Naked and Famous. Their new single, “Young Blood” particularly so. The Naked and Famous are playing at San Francisco Bath House on the 26th of May. I haven’t seen them live yet, so I think I’ll pop along! More gig info can be found on MySpace.

I pledged to write about a woman in technology, so I’ve chosen musician Imogen Heap. You may have read about [Read the Rest...]

Continuing my Song-of-the-day-of-all-time series with this song from 1996. I didn’t hear it until 2001, when my friend Peter insisted that I listen to it. He was so right. Thanks, Peter.

“Languidly Toot” is from Wellingtonian Signer‘s latest album, “Next We Bring You The Fire“. The video is directed by Dan Batkin-Smith and it’s all sun-drenched basketball at Aro Valley basketball court interspersed with live footage from Camp A Low Hum. You can buy “Next We Bring You The Fire” on iTunes and download “Languidly Toot” [Read the Rest...]

Once a week, for Song of the Day, I’m going to post one of my all-time favourite songs. I first heard Birthday by The Sugarcubes in the early nineties, soon after I’d been exposed to Björk’s solo stuff. I instantly fell in love with the song.
