Pantha du Prince has a new album titled Black Noise. I’ve picked, “Bohemian Forest” as song of the day because it hit my play list at the precise moment in the day I needed to noodle-out. I found it interesting that Einstein Music Journal, whom I normally find myself agreeing with on the tunes, gave [Read the Rest...]

Bill Callahan (nee Smog) provided one of my best live experiences in Auckland – performing on the same bill as Joanna Newsom. He’s amazing live, and while I prefer his recorded matter prior to his reverting to his real name, I’m excited to hear he has a live album coming out in March. Below you [Read the Rest...]

Pig Out released their new album, “Rave X” on Monday. It’s FUN. Lots of it. I highly recommend listening to Rave X and jumping on your bed. Late last year, we saw them live and danced our asses off. I was particularly taken with one track’s spoken sample, “Well, I remember old rave and I’ve [Read the Rest...]

No one sings about love like Kim Gordon of Sonic Youth. Kissability from their 1988 classic Daydream Nation is my kind of love tune. Love is feisty. Today’s song of the day is dedicated to @mandamonium and @darren who are getting married today. Love love. Don’t you just? Look into my eyes, don’t you dis’ [Read the Rest...]

Nurses from Portland recorded some Daytrotter sessions this week. I particularly love the “caterpillar playground” track below – between the title and the psych-pop it evokes all sorts of imagery if you close your eyes. Just so. The original is available on their 2009 album, “Apple’s Acre” which is on the iTunes.

I chose a remix of new Goldfrapp tune as song of the day, well firstly because it is a good song, and secondly because I discovered it while I was fan-boying all over Bryan Lee O’Malley the author of the awesome Scott Pilgrim series of graphic novels (he tweeted it). I can’t tell you how [Read the Rest...]

Gil Scott Heron has his first album out in over a decade. Delightfully named “I’m New Here” you can go to the official site for a free track or buy now on iTunes etc. The first single is the gorgeous dark&dylanesque, “Me and the Devil” that you can listen to or see the video of [Read the Rest...]

If The Pains of Being Pure at Heart had released their album during the year I turned 16, in 1996, they would have been my favourite band EVER and had their name scrawled on my pencil case. Lucky for me, fourteen years later, sweet fuzz-pop songs still charm the hell outta me so I have [Read the Rest...]

A song from a Canadian band to celebrate the opening of the 2010 Winter Olympics today. The Vancouver duo Japandroids are releasing a series of 7″s instead of a new album this year – the excellent track below is from the first. Transparent teen-rebellion chic with just the right air of being tired-of-it-all. Here’s your [Read the Rest...]

Cheese on Toast reliably inform me that Hawnay Troof is touring New Zealand in March. This means a couple of Orientation gigs – so you lucky students get some dollars off. The Wellington show is at Mightymighty. Tickets are through Dazzle which is yet another local online ticket outfit. Not really sure we need another [Read the Rest...]
