Emily Capell – My Dad’s a Smiths fan

By Thomas 3 September 2010

Just in time for Father’s Day down-under comes a simply adorable tune and video by one Emily Capell, “My Dad’s a Smiths fan”. All we know is from her MySpace, “an upcoming singer song writer from North West London.” With only a handful of views of the video and fans on MySpace she hasn’t “come up” very far yet but hey, I’m feeling it.

The first song on her playlist is “Reality TV”, which is fitting given we found her song during the ad breaks of X-Factor Australia. Which had some tear-jerker awesome performances for sure.

Spanish group Mendetz cover 90's classic "Freed from Desire"

Mendetz – Freed from Desire

By Thomas 21 August 2010

We were surfing through a mass of awful remixes of Gala’s classic 90′s anthem Free from Desire when amongst the rubble we found spanish Mendetz‘s cover of the tune from last year. Not only is it faithful to the original but its extra endearing and sincere – not something you can say about a dance song that often.

They also do an adorable cover of Morrisey’s “First of the Gang to Die”, which you can hear on their myspace.

Experimental musician Sun Araw is touring NZ in October

Sun Araw – Deep Cover

By Jo 16 August 2010

Nicely creepy and quite dubby. I first heard this on Stinky Jim’s radio show. That man has excellent taste – the show is always worth a listen.

DEEP COVER – SUN ARAW from CatCakes on Vimeo.

Sun Araw is playing at Happy in Wellington on October 14th and Whammy in Auckland on the 15th. Definitely looking forward to this one.
